Panthers Rally Late but Fall Short Against Chiefs

Lakefield, ON – The Port Hope Panthers staged a determined third-period push but couldn’t fully erase a Lakefield surge, falling 4–3 on the road in a spirited and penalty-filled matchup on Tuesday night.

The Panthers opened the scoring midway through the first period on the power play. At 10:24, Mike Hatfield struck for his second of the season, ripping home a feed from Jacob Bone to give Port Hope a 1–0 lead. The Panthers generated several strong looks in the frame and carried their advantage into the intermission.

Lakefield responded in the second, turning momentum with three unanswered goals. The Chiefs tied the game at 7:39 when Teagan Hartnett scored unassisted, then took the lead at 11:00 on the power play as Seth Clark made it 2–1. Just over a minute later, Lakefield added another man-advantage marker — this time from Matthew D’Angelo at 12:31 — stretching the deficit to 3–1 for Port Hope. A string of penalties against the Panthers late in the period prevented them from generating much offense, and they entered the third needing a push.

The Chiefs extended their lead early in the final frame, with Clark netting his second of the night at 1:58 to make it 4–1. But the Panthers refused to go quietly. At 10:27, Spencer Eriksson continued his hot streak, finishing a setup from Luca Damiani-Reis and Avery Palmieri to pull Port Hope within two. With time winding down, the Panthers made one last surge, and Zach Naherne buried a clutch goal with just five seconds left — again with help from Damiani-Reis — trimming the score to 4–3.

Despite the late rally, time ran out before Port Hope could find the equalizer.

The game featured a combined 15 penalties, including multiple misconducts, which disrupted flow and forced both teams to lean heavily on their special-teams units. Port Hope finished with one power-play goal while battling through extended penalty-kill stretches in the second and third periods.

The Panthers will look to build on their resilient late-game effort as they prepare for their next matchup, tomorrow, in Trent Hills vs. the Thunder. Puck Drop is 4:00 PM.
