PORT HOPE, ON – Despite Sutton Scheck and Christian Sokoljuk scoring for the Port Hope
Panthers (2-5-0-0), it was a four-goal third period from the Frankford Huskies (3-2-0-0)
that saw the visiting side win 7-2 on Monday night at Jack Burger Sports Complex.
The game got off to a rough start for Port Hope. Less than two minutes into the game,
Keagan Carr dumped a puck on net and popped over the shoulder of Panthers starting
goaltender, Braden Henderson, for an early 1-0 lead for Frankford. It wasn’t long after
that, Henderson was chased from the game when Spencer Stanuz corralled a loose
puck and tucked it behind Henderson, who saw 5:10 of action before Aidan Cowan
replaced him.
With the Panthers trailing by two after the opening 20 minutes, they were hoping for
some sort of spark to their offence, and being outshot 19-6 wasn’t giving them much
hope. However, a power play opportunity saw Spencer Eriksson throw a puck on net,
and it was Scheck who found the puck on the rebound and scored on a wraparound to
put the home side on the scoreboard. But that momentum was short-lived after Ty
McCambridge scored with the extra attacker as Port Hope had a delayed penalty
coming their way.
After being down by two again, the Panthers knew that something needed to change;
more odd-man rushes, more blocked shots, settle the puck down, and don’t ice it. Well,
Ryerson Minifie was able to find a shooting lane that was knocked down in front, which
allowed Sokoljuk to come in and rip a shot past Huskies starting goaltender, Liam
Boyer, to make it a one-goal game after two periods of play.
In the third, the Huskies just turned up the heat. They were playing more physically,
outskating the Panthers and finding available shooting lanes, and they were testing
Cowan. In doing so, Frankford managed to score four unanswered goals, including two
on the power play, to see them skate away with a 7-2 victory.
Your Port Hope Panthers now have the rest of the week off before hosting the
Amherstview Jets on Saturday, October 11, with puck drop at 7:30 pm at the Jack
Burger Sports Complex.
