Panthers Outpaced by Pirates in Special Teams Battle

PICTON, ON – The Port Hope Panthers came out strong in the second period but ultimately fell short in a penalty-filled contest against the Picton Pirates, losing 5–2 in a game defined by special teams and momentum swings.

After a scoreless first period, both teams found their scoring touch in the second, combining for five goals in a back-and-forth frame before the Pirates pulled away in the third.

Port Hope opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the second period on the power play. Spencer Eriksson buried his second of the season, with assists from Christian Sokoljuk and Ryerson Minifie, giving the Panthers a 1–0 lead.

Picton responded quickly, tying the game less than a minute later at 1:27 when Owen Findlay scored his first of the season off a pass from Luc Amat and Ben Smith.

The Pirates then struck short-handed at 8:35, with Gerrit Kempers finishing off a break to make it 2–1, assisted again by Amat and Will Potts.

Refusing to back down, the Panthers tied the game at 10:41, once again on the power play. Tyler Challice netted his first of the year, with assists from Eriksson and Avery Palmieri.

However, Picton would take the lead for good at 15:13, capitalizing on a power play of their own. Jakob Gardner scored his second of the season, with Keenan Wiles and Kempers picking up assists.

Just 46 seconds into the final period, Picton added insurance when Cole Mulder scored his first of the season, assisted by Wiles and Gardner. Mulder later struck again at 16:22, scoring unassisted into an empty net to give Picton a 5–2 win.

Despite pushing late, the Panthers couldn’t mount a comeback, and the Pirates skated away with the victory.

The game saw a combined 13 minor penalties, along with multiple power-play chances for both teams. The Panthers went 2-for-6 with the man advantage, while Picton converted 1 of 4 power-play opportunities and also scored a crucial short-handed goal.

Port Hope had a golden chance to swing momentum midway through the second period with a penalty shot, awarded to Spencer Eriksson, but taken by Christian Sokoljuk at 13:52. He was unsuccessful on the attempt.

While the Panthers showed promise on special teams, particularly with their power play, they’ll look to tighten up defensively and stay out of the box heading into their next matchup. The team returns to action on Satruday September 27th against the Frankford Huskies.
