Panthers Fall to Chiefs in Tough Home Loss

PORT HOPE, ON – The Port Hope Panthers had a challenging night on home ice Saturday as they fell to the Lakefield Chiefs, 7-1.

Lakefield opened the scoring at 6:35 of the first period, with Ethan Yantha netting his first of the season off a feed from Charlie Blewett. The Chiefs doubled their lead at 10:05 on the power play, as Lucas Legault finished a setup from Blewett, who already had two assists by the midpoint of the period.

The Panthers battled back physically, but penalties on both sides disrupted the flow. Despite some zone time, Port Hope couldn’t capitalize on the man advantage.

The Chiefs wasted no time extending their lead, scoring just 12 seconds into the second. Owen Thake made it 3–0, assisted by Jack Ryan and Alex Whitney.

The Panthers got on the board at 8:58, when Kaden King buried his first of the season with a strong effort, cutting the deficit to 3–1.

But the Chiefs responded quickly. Alex Whitney added a fourth at 11:33, and Thake notched his second of the night at 17:23, before Yantha closed out the period with his second goal just 22 seconds before intermission. Lakefield carried a commanding 6–1 lead into the third.

On the penalty kill early in the period, the Panthers gave up a short-handed goal to Ethan Yantha, completing his hat trick unassisted at 2:21.

While the Panthers played hard to the final whistle, they couldn’t break through the Chiefs’ defense again.

The game featured plenty of physical play, including a second-period fight between Bennett Harty (Lakefield) and Sutton Scheck (Port Hope) that resulted in game misconducts and major penalties for both.

In total, Port Hope took 13 penalty minutes, while Lakefield was assessed 11. Discipline proved costly for the Panthers, especially as the Chiefs capitalized on power play and short-handed opportunities.

With the loss, Port Hope will regroup and refocus as they prepare for their next game. Head Coach Corey Beer emphasized the importance of staying disciplined and sticking to structure as the team moves forward.

The Panthers return to action on Thursday against the Picton Pirates.
